We know, we’ve heard it all before. In fact, we’ve said it ourselves many times. But of course, tomorrow never comes – and never will.
There’s a reason why our brain thinks like this, putting off something that, let’s face it won’t be easy, and we really don’t want to do it anyway – it is to protect us from making life’s difficult decisions. Why do something that is stressful or difficult (like starting a diet) when we can just carry on as normal. It’s a comfortable rut that we all sink into. It’s so easy to put off things until tomorrow. Making this decision isn’t stressful, it isn’t difficult, and it lets us carry on with our lives. The huge downside, is that nothing ever gets done.
Procrastination isn’t just about dieting, it can apply to pretty much all areas of your life, such as going to the gym, joining a club, starting a difficult work task, mowing the lawn, starting a diet. It’s just so easy to put it off until tomorrow. However much we want to lose weight, drop a couple of dress sizes, wear a bikini, or simply feel healthier, it’s so hard to get started.
Well, there is a mechanism that will help stop procrastination and propel you to taking the first step (that’s the hardest one) to achieving your goal. It could be any of the above, or dozens of things in your life that you never get around to starting, let alone finishing.
The trick to ‘doing it now’ rather than putting it off until tomorrow, is to trick your mind out of its comfort zone and forcing it to accept action rather than inaction. With dieting, the likely scenario is that you’ll reach for that second piece of cake, or fizzy drink and say to yourself “I’ll start to diet tomorrow”. This is giving yourself permission to over-indulge today, after all you’ve promised yourself it will happen tomorrow, so you may as well enjoy yourself now. The same sequence of events can apply to just about anything; mowing the lawn, washing the car, starting or completing a piece of work, or going for a run.
So, the next time you hear yourself saying “I’ll start or do it tomorrow”, stop thinking about it right then and there, and instead start counting out loud 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO. On the word ‘go’ get up and go and do the task, without any further ‘internal’ discussion. These internal discussions are stopping you from taking the action you need to take to get a job done.
We are not saying that this will be easy, but it is a mechanism that will help you start to achieve your goals, and the good news is that this new way of tackling jobs or objectives, will become the norm. You will cease to be inactive and a procrastinator and start to be active and an achiever.
Taking that first step isn’t the hard part. The hardest part is overcoming your brain’s inclination to protect you by putting obstacles in your way and giving you an easy opt-out. Just thinking about dieting is enough to put anyone’s head in a spin. Food items to buy, meals to plan, new scales to buy, weekly weigh-ins, calorie counting, forbidden foods. Our heads are in a spin already just writing about it. Well, the good news for Successful Slimming members is that they don’t do any of this. In fact, they don’t diet! Yes, you have read this correctly. They don’t diet. Instead, they use the power of hypnotherapy that trains their minds to think like a naturally slim person and adopt their habits, such as only eating when hungry, eating slowly and stopping when full.
